The Kamloops Bee Club is excited to announce its upcoming free Field Day, open to the public and taking place on Saturday, May 31st, from 10 AM to 2 PM at the beautiful Lomond’s Ashcroft Honey, located at Thompson River Estates, 1559 Steelhead Rd, Savona, BC V0K 2P0.
Keith inspecting honeybees during field day. This event promises to be a valuable learning experience for beekeepers of all levels, from beginners just starting out to seasoned experts looking to expand their knowledge, and is a fantastic opportunity for anyone curious about beekeeping to come and learn. Several hands-on stations will be set up throughout the day, offering demonstrations and opportunities for discussion.
Here’s a sneak peek at some of the informative stations planned:
Station 1: Nancy and Dave will lead a demonstration on the essential techniques for splitting hives and introducing new queen bees. This is a crucial skill for colony management and expansion.
Station 2: Join Joe Lomond and Bob Meridith for a practical session on mite testing and a detailed demonstration and discussion about the use and analysis of the “sticky board” for monitoring varroa mite levels.
Station 3: Murray will present on the topic of “making more bees,” focusing on the effective use of a 3-way queen castle for raising additional queen bees.
Station 4: Keith Ray from Vernon will explain how to use the principles of the Demaree method of swarm control with a Shelgrove board. This advanced technique allows nurse bees to raise queens in the upper box, which can then be used for requeening existing colonies, establishing two-queen colonies, or creating backup nucs.
Attendees are reminded to bring a bag lunch and a chair for their comfort during the day. This is also a great opportunity to bring any beekeeping-related questions you may have for experienced members.
Important Reminders for Attendees:
* Please note that for your safety, no open-toed shoes will be permitted as there is cactus present in the area.
* Out of consideration for the bees, please refrain from wearing strong perfumes or shampoos on the day of the event.
Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to learn, connect with fellow beekeepers, and enjoy a day at Lomond’s Ashcroft Honey. We look forward to seeing you there!
