HELLO GARDENERS. YES, WE ARE HAVING A SEEDY SATURDAY THIS YEAR. March 1, 2014 at Sahali Centre Mall from 10:00-2:00. See the attached brochure. SEMINARS AND DOOR PRIZES ARE BACK.
But here is the catch WE'RE GOING LOCAL THIS YEAR - No more commercial seeds. This is the way we want to go with Seedy Saturdaybecause growing and saving locally adapted seeds is very important for food security. Plus locally grown and saved sees are usually organic without the big price tag.
WE NEED YOU TO BRING SEEDS THAT YOU HAVE SAVED AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE. You don't have to package them unless you would like to do so. We will need a label with the name (variety), date saved and germination rate if you have that information. If you have not done germination testing just say so on the label. If you think that your saved seeds might have crossed with another variety in the same species (e.g. you grew 2 different squashes) you should state that on the label. Don't worry about lettuce, tomatoes, peas, and beans as they are self-pollinating. If you only grew one variety of seeds on for the second year in order to grow seeds (e.g. biennials such as carrots) then don't worry about crossing.
Germination rates are handy because it tells you how thickly to sow. To get germination rate simple place 10 seeds on a wet wrung-out paper towel in a baggy. Place it in a warm area and don't let the paper towel dry out. Within a week or so you should be able to determine your germination rate. Simply multiply the number of seeds out of 10 that germinated times 10 to get the percentage. 50% and above is best.
I like to make a sheet of labels then copy them and cut them up. This helps speed up things when folks are packaging their seeds. They can simply stick a label in their envelop and don't have to hold up the line by writing out the information.
If you don't have a printer or the ability to do this you can send me your label information and I can print it for you . You can then collect your labels at the event and place them with your container of seeds.
There is no expectation that you need to stay with your seeds. Several Master Gardeners in Training will be monitoring the tables and encouraging folks to take just enough for their own garden needs.
We do have seminars (see flyer for seminar schedule) ongoing throughout the event in a separate room and demonstrations of paper pot folding and paper envelope folding at the Master Gardener tables. You can also pick up information handouts on seed saving and/or sign-up to have longer handouts emailed to you.
REMEMBER
BRING YOUR SAVED SEEDS TO SHARE & PLACE THEM ON THE SEED TABLE
BRING YOUR OWN RECYCLED ENVELOPES SO YOU CAN GET SOME SEEDS AS WELL.
BRING A FOLDING CHAIR FOR THE SEMINARS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO STAND OR SIT ON THE FLOOR (approximately 20-30 minutes long)
SEND ME YOUR LABEL INFORMATION IF YOU WANT ME TO PRINT THEM
IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY SEEDS TO SHARE YOU SHOULD STILL COME TO GET SOME SEEDS
Thanks and looking forward to seeing you at Seedy Saturday
