A review of the Mentor Program is underway. Participants will be surveyed and a summary of the program will be made available.
The Mentorship Program has begun with mentors and new beekeeper assignments completed. As new beekeepers take beekeeping courses and current beekeepers seek to upgrade their skills and knowledge, our members are building connections. Program Guidelines of the Mentor Program
Mentor Program Objective:
To guide and assist new beekeepers in all aspects for the first two years of beekeeping.
Program Description
This program operates under the oversight of a Mentor Manager who works with several Mentor Advisors. The Mentor Advisors each maintain communication with up to three Mentors that are paired with two New Beekeepers.
It is not the responsibility of the mentor to maintain the new beekeepers hive. The mentor is to assist in the search for knowledge by answering questions and to help the new beekeeper to think BEE by suggesting different ideas and paths to explore.
The mentor should not have to spend a great deal of time with new beekeepers. Most communication should be by telephone or email. The new beekeeper should plan to visit the mentor’s apiary where the mentor can demonstrate, explain and answer questions about their management practices. The new beekeeper can then put into practice, in their own apiary, what they have learned.
Mentor Manager Responsibilities:
1. Contact beekeeping class teachers to obtain names and addresses of new beekeepers seeking mentors. Manage requests for mentors from online sources such as email and the bee club website.
2. Compile a list of beekeepers willing to become mentors:
A. Determine each mentor candidate’s experience level.
B. Determine how many new beekeepers each mentor is willing to work with.
3. Assign new beekeepers to mentors using a ratio of 2 new beekeepers to 1 mentor, and keeping geographical proximity in mind.
4. Provide mentors with a list of their assigned new beekeepers.
5. Monitor mentor/new beekeeper relationship and assist as necessary.
6. Recruit mentor advisors and assign mentors to work with mentor advisors.
7. With Mentor Advisors, implement Program Review and assess changes to Program Guidelines.
Mentor Advisor Responsibilities
1. Will have successfully completed the Bee Masters program.
2. Offer advice and share beekeeping experience with their assigned mentors.
3. May assume the responsibilities of mentoring new beekeepers.
4. Maintain communication with mentor manager regarding program concerns and successes.
Mentor Responsibilities:
1. A minimum of five years continuous successful beekeeping experience.
2. Inform mentor advisor about concerns and successes under the program.
3. Contact assigned new beekeepers to discuss and agree upon a preferred time and type of communication.
4. Guide and assist new beekeeper in all aspects of their first two years of beekeeping. Help new beekeepers solve their own problems.
5. Invite new beekeepers to watch or participate when conducting hive management activities in mentor's apiary, or visit new beekeeper’s apiary.
6. Commit to mentoring for a minimum of 2 years.
7. Strongly encourage new beekeepers to become mentors when qualified.
8. Mentors strive to respond to new beekeeper concerns within 24 hours.
9. The mentor manager should be informed if these responsibilities are not being met.
New Beekeeper Responsibilities:
1. Register apiary and comply with provincial and local requirements for keeping bees in BC, and in a municipality.
2. Must be a member of the Kamloops Beekeepers Club and attend regular meetings and field days.
3. Successfully completion of a recognized beekeeping course.
4. Commit to the two years of participation in the mentor program.
5. Respect mentor's time and privacy, and practice punctuality when visiting mentor’s apiary.
6. Have all equipment assembled, painted and ready for package or nuc before install date.
7. Read from various sources (books, class material, magazines, internet) of beekeeping information. Recognize that beekeeping is a lifelong commitment to learning.
8. Keep records of beekeeping and hive activity for review by new beekeeper and mentor.
9. Learn what to look for during a hive inspection.
10. Observe natural cycle of local plants, and flowers blooming.
11. Seriously consider becoming a mentor when qualified in the future.
12. Make an effort contribute to club projects (field days, Day of The Honeybee etc).
Kamloops Beekeepers Club Responsibilities:
1. Provide opportunities for education of accepted beekeeping practices.
2. Schedule seasonal field days and education sessions to enable senior beekeepers to share their beekeeping experience.
3. Promote and encourage sustainable beekeeping.
